Livermore was founded in 1869 by William Mendenhall and named for Robert Livermore, Mendenhall’s friend and a local rancher who settled in the area in the 1840s. It is California’s oldest wine region, framed by award-winning wineries, farm lands, and ranches that mirror the valley’s western heritage. The city was incorporated in 1876 and transformed into an agricultural center after the opening of the railroad through town in 1869.
